India’s shrimp export market is showing signs of picking up after a slower start to 2026.
The latest numbers show that India exported 455,489 tonnes of shrimp between January and July 2026, up 1% compared with the same period last year.
But the more interesting number came in July.
India shipped 81,674 tonnes of shrimp in July alone, an 8.2% increase year-on-year. The monthly volume was also higher than the expected 80,000 tonnes.
So, what is behind this improvement—and can India maintain the momentum?
July Becomes a Record Month
July 2026 stands out in India's shrimp export calendar.
With 81,674 tonnes shipped during the month, July recorded the highest monthly export volume mentioned in the latest data.
The 8.2% year-on-year increase is particularly important because India's exports had recorded a marginal decline during the first half of the year.
July therefore helped change the direction of the overall trend.
By the end of July, India's cumulative shrimp exports had moved from a marginal decline to 1% year-on-year growth.
What Is Happening in Key Markets?
The improvement is not happening in just one market.
The US market could see more normal trading conditions, which may provide additional support to Indian shrimp exports.
At the same time, Indian shrimp is gaining ground in the UK and European Union markets.
This gives exporters more opportunities to distribute their shipments across major international markets.
For India, stronger demand from multiple destinations could become important for maintaining export volumes through the rest of the year.
Can India Have a Record Year?
The current export trend has raised expectations for the full year.
With 455,489 tonnes already exported in the first seven months, and July delivering a record monthly volume, India's shrimp export volumes are showing an improving trajectory.
If this momentum continues during the remaining months of 2026, India could be on track for record shrimp export volumes and export value for CY26.
However, the final outcome will depend on how demand develops in the US, UK and EU markets and how export shipments perform during the rest of the year.
What Does This Mean for India’s Shrimp Industry?
Stronger exports are important for India's entire shrimp value chain.
Higher export demand can support processing activity and create stronger market opportunities for exporters. But higher export volumes do not automatically mean higher profits for farmers.
Farm-gate prices are influenced by several factors, including international demand, shrimp size, production costs, processing demand and market prices.
So, for farmers, the key question is not only “How much shrimp is India exporting?”
It is also:
“Are stronger exports translating into better prices at the farm level?”
That will depend on how the export market develops over the coming months.
The Bigger Picture
For now, India's shrimp export numbers are moving in a positive direction.
January–July 2026: 455,489 tonnes
Growth: 1% year-on-year
July 2026: 81,674 tonnes
July growth: 8.2% year-on-year
After a slower first half, July has brought a noticeable improvement in shipment volumes.
The next few months will show whether this is simply a strong July—or the beginning of a stronger second half for India's shrimp exports.
For India's shrimp industry, the race is now on to see whether this export momentum can carry through the rest of 2026.
