Although broodstock are multiplied domestically, the original breeding lines still originate from international breeding companies.
In other words, India has improved its broodstock management capacity, but the country's shrimp genetics still depend largely on imported breeding programmes.
What Does Genetic Self-Reliance Really Mean?
Building genetic self-reliance does not mean stopping imports overnight.
Instead, it means developing India's own scientific capability to selectively breed shrimp over multiple generations while maintaining high health standards and genetic diversity.
