After understanding the importance of water quality in shrimp farming, it is important to look more closely at one of its key parameters: pH.

Almost every shrimp farmer has come across pH readings in a water quality test or laboratory report. But pH is not simply a number to record. It tells us something important about the condition of the pond water.

Simply explained, pH is a measure of how acidic or alkaline water is.

The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14. A value of 7 is considered neutral. Values below 7 indicate acidic conditions, while values above 7 indicate alkaline conditions.

But shrimp ponds are not static containers of water. They are active ecosystems where biological and chemical processes are continuously taking place. As these processes change, the pH of the water can also change.

This is why pH can vary between different ponds and may also fluctuate within the same pond.

For shrimp farmers, the important question is not only, “What is my pH today?” It is also important to understand how that pH is changing and whether the pond is remaining relatively stable.

A suitable pH range helps maintain favourable water conditions for shrimp farming. For shrimp ponds, a commonly targeted range is around 7.5 to 8.5.

However, maintaining a suitable number alone is not enough. Stability is equally important. Sudden changes towards lower or higher pH levels can affect the pond environment and place additional stress on shrimp.

pH is also connected with other processes taking place in pond water. Changes in pH can influence the behaviour of compounds such as ammonia, making it an important parameter to consider as part of overall water quality management.

The problem is that pH cannot be accurately judged by simply looking at the pond water. A pond may appear normal, while the actual pH may be different from what a farmer assumes.

That is why regular pH testing matters. Testing at regular intervals helps farmers understand their pond conditions, observe changes over time and identify unusual fluctuations.

Smart shrimp farming means making crop decisions based on actual water quality conditions, not guesswork. Knowing the pH of the pond and tracking how it changes gives farmers a better understanding of what is happening inside their water.

pH may be just one number on a test result, but in shrimp farming, understanding that number can be an important step towards better water quality management, healthier pond conditions and more informed crop decisions.
